What Makes a Ganesh Idol Eco-Friendly?

Not every idol that says “eco-friendly” is really eco-friendly. Here is what to check:

  • Made of clay, not POP. Clay (also called Shadu clay) melts fully in water. POP does not melt. It just breaks into small pieces and stays in the water for months.
  • Natural colours only. Chemical paints harm fish and other water life. Natural colours are safe.
  • Seeds inside the idol. Some idols have flower or vegetable seeds mixed into the clay. Once the idol dissolves, you can take out the seeds and grow them in a pot.

A note on Dharavi Kumbharwada: This is Mumbai’s old potter colony. Many small artisans here make clay idols by hand. There is no single shop or phone number for all of them. It is best to go there in person in early September and pick an idol you like. This also supports local artisans directly.

Tip: Prices and stock change fast close to the festival. Please call or check the website before you visit or place an order.

After You Bring the Idol Home

A plantable idol only works if you care for it the right way. Keep these simple steps in mind:

  1. Do visarjan at home. Use a large bucket or tub. This is easier than going to the sea, and it is better for the environment too.
  2. Wait for the clay to melt fully. This can take a few hours to one full day.
  3. Take out the seeds gently. Let them dry in the sun for a day before you plant them.
  4. Use good potting soil, not soil dug straight from the ground. This helps the seeds grow better, especially in pots on a balcony.
  5. Water lightly, not too much. Keep the pot where it gets a few hours of sun.
